The Rockland Housing Action Coalition has picked 26 applicants for consideration to become renters at a new below-market affordable housing apartment building for seniors in Spring Valley.

The 26 people were selected Wednesday by lottery from 111 applications to rent the 26 1-bedroom apartments at Youngblood Senior Housing at 201 Main Street. Each person will have to meet income and program guidelines before he or she can move in. Those who do not may be replaced by other candidates considered from the waiting list.

“There is a shortage of below-market rental housing in the county,” said Gerri Levy, executive director of the Nanuet-based Rockland Housing Action Coalition, a nonprofit organization that works with developers and municipalities to increase the supply of affordable housing for low- and moderate-income residents. “This is a fantastic opportunity for active adults, 55 plus, to rent affordable units and remain in the community.”
