  • Make a scale drawing of the new residence, decide what furniture to take and where it will fit.
  • Contact a professional liquidator or appraiser to evaluate what items to keep and how best to dispose of other treasure accumulated over a lifetime.
  • Sort items into one of five areas – Keep, Give to family, Give to charity, Sell, or Discard.
  • Pick one room where most of your packed and labeled boxes can be stored. Store the items to be given away or sold in another area of the house or the garage. This will keep the rest of your living space comfortable and uncluttered.
  • Save the sorting and purging of the endless piles of paperwork for break time or while watching TV in your favorite chair. Shred all documents with personal information that you plan on discarding – be aware of identity theft.
